Artist of the month : Sully Burrows

Because his grandfather played with both the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Pittsburgh Penguins, it would be easy to predict a run at the NHL. And although he did play competitive hockey, music stole the puck and steered Sully Burrows into playing covers at the local Boston Pizza.

Winner of this year’s CMAOntario Breakthrough Artist award, the Parry Sound native started writing songs at age 15, was picked up by powerhouse booking agency Paquin Artists, signed with the Partner Records Label at age 17, and dropped his debut single “Youth” (co-written with Owen Riegling) in October of 2024. The song reveals his well-developed sense of perspective: “You always think you have time, but things can change, and the things you love could be gone faster than you expect. This record is about enjoying the time you have because no matter what you do, you can’t buy back your youth.”

Sully attracted serious (or is it “Sirius”?) attention, surfacing as a finalist in Sirius XM’s Top of the Country. He got a lot of dirt on his boots while touring this year: CMA Fest in Nashville, the CMAOntaro Sharbot Lake Beach Bash, Kempenfest, Boots & Hearts, Lasso Festival in Montreal, Smoke & Spurs and Misty City Music Festival, CCMA Country Music Week in Kelowna and Tailgate Festival. Celebrity opens a lot of doors – Sully threw the opening pitch at a Blue Jays game & helped the London Knights celebrate their Memorial Cup win.

And like the old cliché, you can take Sully out of his hometown, but it’s still inside. 2025’s releases, “Rally Around” (about a “hometown crowd”) & “Somewhere in a Smalltown” are proof he carries it with him. “My favourite part of the process is performing. I love sharing my music and building off the energy of the venue.”

Et bien qu’il ait pratiqué le hockey de compétition, la musique a pris le dessus et a poussé Sully Burrows à jouer des reprises au Boston Pizza local.

Lauréat du prix CMAOntario Breakthrough Artist de cette année, le natif de Parry Sound a commencé à écrire des chansons à l’âge de 15 ans, a été repéré par la puissante agence de booking Paquin Artists, a signé avec le label Partner Records à l’âge de 17 ans et a sorti son premier single « Youth » (co-écrit avec Owen Riegling) en octobre 2024. La chanson révèle son sens aigu de la perspective : « On pense toujours avoir le temps, mais les choses peuvent changer, et ce qu’on aime peut disparaître plus vite qu’on ne le pense. Ce disque parle de profiter du temps qu’on a, car quoi qu’on fasse, on ne peut pas racheter sa jeunesse. »

Sully a attiré une attention sérieuse (ou serait-ce « Sirius » ?) en se classant parmi les finalistes du Top of the Country de Sirius XM. Il a beaucoup voyagé cette année : CMA Fest à Nashville, CMAOntaro Sharbot Lake Beach Bash, Kempenfest, Boots & Hearts, Lasso Festival à Montréal, Smoke & Spurs et Misty City Music Festival, CCMA Country Music Week à Kelowna et Tailgate Festival. La célébrité ouvre beaucoup de portes : Sully a lancé la première balle lors d’un match des Blue Jays et a aidé les London Knights à célébrer leur victoire en Coupe Memorial.

Et comme le dit le vieux cliché, on peut sortir Sully de sa ville natale, mais elle reste en lui. Les sorties de 2025, « Rally Around » (sur la « foule de sa ville natale ») et « Somewhere in a Smalltown » sont la preuve qu’il la porte en lui. « Ce que je préfère dans ce processus, c’est de me produire sur scène. J’adore partager ma musique et m’appuyer sur l’énergie du lieu. »
