Artist of the Month: Matthew Runaway

Raised on a cattle-and-crops farm in Perth, ON, Matthew Runaway is rapidly gaining recognition in the music industry!

Matthew has been immersed in the music industry for years. In his early 20s, he toured across North America with his EDM rock band, Aspire. Given the success of that band, he was encouraged to continue pursuing singing and songwriting in the country genre. Luckily for him, this added to his unique style and attracted a diverse fanbase.

His latest release, “Missing Sweater”, was released to radio on Sept 26, 2022 and has reached Top 10 for CanCon downloads. If you haven’t seen the visualizer for the song, it showcases the beautiful Nashville skyline at dawn, as well as snapshots of landmarks the city is known for. The song was written with fellow singer/songwriters Lydia Sutherland and Parker Graye. The song came by surprise as they were in the process of writing another song. Matthew spoke the lyric “all you left me with is a missing sweater”; the three of them paused in unison and were inspired to write a new song entirely based on that moment.

Other great songs to check out are his previous singles “Just Drive” (which reached over 1 million downloads) and “Workin’ On Me.”

Not only is Matthew entertaining on stage but is a natural on screen too. He has used social media as a way to express even more of his creativity by uploading commentary style videos. These videos can be found on his YouTube channel with the title “Country Singer Reacts To…” In the past year, he gained almost 100,000 subscribers and averages about 1.5 million views each month. This has landed him inside the 900th biggest in Canada and Top 5 in Country Music.

Despite his success on social media, this small town boy declares “Music is my life – there is no Plan B.”

Though Matthew travels to Nashville often, writing and sharing his talent, he still resides in Fort Erie, ON, spending time as a car enthusiast.  When Matthew is not writing, singing, or recording videos in his downtime you can find him working on his 5th Generation SS Camaro.
