It was a full house of celebration and new music last month as The Western Swing Authority hosted a release party for their brand-new album “12 to 6 Central” at the Registry Theatre in their hometown of Kitchener. Despite it being their fifth full length album, it was the first time they performed on an actual release date. It was a special day, as they were supported by many fans, friends and family.

The seven-piece band is comprised of some of Canada’s most sought-after musicians, who have been performing together for 15 years. Featuring Shane Guse as fiddler, vocalist and frontman, his wife, Stacey Lee Guse (vocals and former member of JUNO and CCMA nominated group LACE), Ed Ringwald (steel guitar), Dan Howlett (fiddle, banjo), Jim Boudreau (drums), Paul Chapman (guitar) and Matthew Lima (bass).

If you’ve been to the CMAOntario Awards, you’ll recognize The Western Swing Authority as annual the house band. Their talent is undeniable as they back dozens of artists during these events, so it’s nice to have the spotlight focused solely on them. “12 to 6 Central” was produced by Grammy-winner and nine-time JUNO award winner, Colin Linden. The album encompasses traditional string band, jazz, blues, folk and traditional pop styles that make them stand out and reintroduces those sounds to a new generation.

The evening was filled full of toe-tapping upbeat songs, from true Western Swing Authority staples to passionate Patsy Cline-like ballads. I personally enjoyed Stacey singing “Full Moon Full of Love”, originally by k.d. lang (1989). The song stuck with me for days! Shane’s “bu-bu- Bottom of This Glass” theatrics makes a fun song to sing along to as well. The dynamic between this duo is so entertaining! This album delivers a balance of laughter and tears.

Undoubtedly the most unique of the collection is “Happy Chickens”, which is a fun upbeat song that includes recent Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame inductee, Jason McCoy. The video shows the band (and McCoy) as paper cut outs performing for chickens in a barn. This is a clear demonstration of the variety of musical personalities and stylistic approaches of each member, in a raw and honest light.

Most recently, the album cut “Heart of the Country” has been featured on Sirius XM’s North Americana channel and “New Favourite Whiskey” was released to radio.

The Western Swing Authority’s live performances have been described as “all killer, no filler”, but don’t take Cashbox Canada’s word for it -have a listen for yourself. They’re known for getting the audience up and on their feet!

Le mois dernier, la Western Swing Authority a organisé une soirée de lancement de son tout nouvel album, “12 to 6 Central”, au Registry Theatre de Kitchener, sa ville natale, dans une salle pleine de célébrations et de nouvelles musiques. Bien qu’il s’agisse de leur cinquième album complet, c’était la première fois qu’ils se produisaient à une date de sortie réelle. C’était une journée spéciale, car ils étaient soutenus par de nombreux fans, amis et membres de leur famille.

Le groupe de sept musiciens est composé de quelques-uns des musiciens les plus recherchés du Canada, qui se produisent ensemble depuis 15 ans. Il comprend Shane Guse, violoniste, chanteur et leader, sa femme Stacey Lee Guse (chanteuse et ancienne membre du groupe LACE, nominé aux prix JUNO et CCMA), Ed Ringwald (steel guitar), Dan Howlett (fiddle, banjo), Jim Boudreau (drums), Paul Chapman (guitar) et Matthew Lima (bass).

Si vous avez assisté à la cérémonie de remise des prix CMAOntario, vous reconnaîtrez que The Western Swing Authority est l’orchestre maison de l’année. Leur talent est indéniable, car ils accompagnent des dizaines d’artistes lors de ces événements, et il est donc agréable que les projecteurs soient braqués uniquement sur eux. L’album “12 to 6 Central” a été produit par Colin Linden, lauréat d’un Grammy et neuf fois lauréat d’un prix JUNO. L’album englobe les styles traditionnels du string band, du jazz, du blues, du folk et de la pop traditionnelle qui les distinguent et réintroduit ces sons dans une nouvelle génération.

La soirée a été remplie de chansons entraînantes, allant des incontournables du Western Swing Authority aux ballades passionnées à la Patsy Cline. J’ai personnellement apprécié que Stacey chante “Full Moon Full of Love”, originellement de k.d. lang (1989). Cette chanson m’a marqué pendant des jours ! Le “bu-bu- Bottom of This Glass” théâtral de Shane en fait aussi une chanson amusante à chanter. La dynamique entre ce duo est tellement divertissante ! Cet album offre un équilibre entre le rire et les larmes.

La chanson la plus originale de la collection est sans aucun doute “Happy Chickens”, une chanson amusante et entraînante à laquelle participe Jason McCoy, récemment intronisé au Temple de la renommée de la musique country canadienne. La vidéo montre le groupe (et McCoy) sous la forme de silhouettes en papier découpé, jouant pour des poulets dans une grange. C’est une démonstration claire de la variété des personnalités musicales et des approches stylistiques de chaque membre, sous une lumière crue et honnête.

Plus récemment, le morceau de l’album “Heart of the Country” a été diffusé sur la chaîne North Americana de Sirius XM et “New Favourite Whiskey” a été diffusé à la radio.

Les prestations en direct de The Western Swing Authority ont été décrites comme étant ” entièrement mortelles, sans remplissage “, mais ne croyez pas Cashbox Canada sur parole – écoutez-les vous-même. Ils sont réputés pour faire lever le public !
