Ontario’s Country Music Pioneers: Donna Moon
November 17, 2017A Message from the President (November 2017)
November 17, 2017Artist of the Month: Johnson Crook
Since their first appearance at Boots & Hearts in 2015 in the Emerging Artist Showcase, Toronto-based Johnson Crook have been showing country music fans in Ontario and beyond what they have to share.
Noel Johnson, Jared Craig, and Nathan and Trevor Crook have worked hard on stage and in studio to refine their rootsy country sound, and in 2017, have already released their debut EP and debut full length album. Along with the music, the band filmed and released videos for “Shadows”, “Canada To Heartbreak”, and their lead single, “Minnedosa”.
In an effort to earn even more fans, and to share more music, Johnson Crook have also created their Crooked Attic Series on YouTube, sharing covers of songs including Maren Morris’ “My Church”, Sam Cooke’s “Bring It On Home”, and Tom Petty’s “Mary Jane’s Last Dance”.
On stage and on their album, Johnson Crook share smooth four-part harmonies, using every voice in the band to its fullest, and creating a sound that flows easy, along with their tight musicianship, from verse to verse.
On their record, The Album (August 2017), the boys added another voice when Canadian legend Tom Cochrane joined them in studio to sing on “Mr. Nobody”. The “Life Is A Highway” singer counts himself among their fans, and that’s a feather any band would be proud to have in their cap.
Even in a year with an album release, and shows at venues like Toronto’s Canadian National Exhibition, Lucknow’s Music in the Fields, Cavendish Beach Music Festival, Burlington’s Sound of Music Festival, and more, these four singer/songwriters have been working on new music. Most recently we heard them share some of their newest tracks at Toronto’s Rivoli.
November 2017 sees Johnson Crook hitting Ontario radio stations to talk about their debut album, their single, and what’s coming next for the band. And knowing these guys, they’ll be busy with more live shows to finish up 2017 and roll into 2018.
