Artist of the Month: Callie McCullough

Labeled with her larger than life and vivacious personality, Dolly Parton-sized beauty, and angelic voice, singer/songwriter Callie McCullough is sure to grab your attention.

Born 3rd generation into a musical family, her contemporary and alternative music style has made an impact in Country Music. It is a combo of traditional country, Celtic, folk and bluegrass. Her grassy textured sound is what we can expect in her forthcoming collection of new music. Callie explains, “I’m very much just organically letting the songs become what they want to become.”

Having just come out of a long term relationship, and reflecting on the direction of her life, she thought her next few years might look really different. With confidence and sass came her latest single “What If I Don’t” (co-written with Scotty Kipfer).  Her first release since 2021.  The music video (released in September) shows off more of Callies fun personality. The single is described as an anthem for women to break free from conformity. As stated by Callie, “the song playfully challenges the expectations of marriage, having babies, making money and the notion of getting older.” Asking all the “what ifs” with a wink and a nod.

As Callie further explains, “You hit a certain age and it feels like there’s pressure coming from every direction that it’s time to settle down. It’s all stories of the biological clock, running out of time, and being afraid of getting older… I for one think getting older is going to be a blast and I can’t wait to continue doing whatever the hell I want for the rest of my life.”

McCullough’s debut album, After Midnight (2020) featured members from the bluegrass band, Union Station (known to be associated with Alison Krauss) and the western-swing group, The Time Jumpers (Nashville studio musicians with previous member Vince Gill) garnered a nomination for Alternative Country Album of the Year from the Canadian Country Music Association, along with CMAO Nominations: Roots Artist of the Year, Rising Star and Songwriter of the Year.

During the Canadian Country Music Week Callie and I popped a bottle and had great conversation. We played a fun game called “What if I Don’t” where I asked Callie a few fun dating related questions! Follow my socials (listed below) where I’ll be sharing this interview soon.
