Artist of the Month: The Abrams

The Abrams (brothers John and James) have been playing music together for nearly their entire lives. It’s not only second nature to them at this point, it’s in their blood. As fourth-generation musicians, the burgeoning career of these country/bluegrass brothers feels like it’s meant to be.

In their young career, The Abrams have already put together an impressive list of achievements, awards, and accolades. They became the youngest Canadian duo to play on the hallowed Opry stage, they took home the 2017 CMAOntario award for Roots Group of the Year. After releasing their Bob Dylan/Arlo Guthrie tribute album in 2009, Guthrie himself was quoted as saying that these boys are “way too young to be playing that good. I know I will be hearing from The Abrams Brothers for a long time to come.”

More recently, their career took a big step forward when The Abrams signed on with Warner Music Canada. The duo released a self-titled EP in 2016 that included the fan favourite (and absolute jam) Champion. That collection of six songs signalled a new chapter for John and James, and since then they’ve been pushing hard to work their way higher in country music around the world.

2019 is going to be another ‘big step’ year for the boys, with a brand new single in March, Sounds Good To Me (produced by Matt Rovey: Zac Brown Band, Alan Jackson, more).

The Abrams will also be hitting the road this year, with a lot of miles on the schedule. First, the brothers head to the U.S., where they’ll spend about six weeks touring around south of the border, sharing songs, stories, and giving fans a taste of what they have to offer. And then, the Canadian country artists are headed across the Atlantic to play shows in the UK later in the spring. It’s a busy stretch, but one that allows The Abrams to experience new places, play in front of new audiences, and can only serve to help them take that next step.

Later this summer, when the sun gets hot and the festival season heats up, The Abrams are scheduled to hit the stages at Boots & Hearts and the Boot Hill Country Jamboree. It’s still early, so we won’t be surprised to see the duo adding more shows, more festivals, and more opportunities to their calendar.

And, with whisperings of more new music coming this year, we have a feeling that we’re all going to be hearing a lot more about John and James before long.
